Anchors take part in all-star game
The Alexandria Blue Anchors were represented by two players at the annual Northwoods League All-Star Game on Tuesday night in Wisconsin with Jordan Lee and Andrew Thome both taking part in the festivities.
Lee started for the North squad and hit sixth while playing left field. He came up twice and went 0-for-2 with a strikeout before being lifted. The outfielder from Texas-Corpus Christi is hitting .374 for the Blue Anchors this season in 123 at-bats with seven home runs and 22 RBIs.
The South won the all-star game 3-0 on one swing of the bat against Thome. The Madison Mallards’ Pete Alonso came up in the fourth inning with two runners on after a walk and a single. Alonso lifted a three-run home run over the left-center field wall. He entered the game with 13 home runs this season, second in the NWL.
It’s a lead that would hold the whole way as 11 South pitchers combined to shut down the North. They allowed eight hits, three walks and struck out 11. The South offense had just three hits but they made them count with Alonso’s home run being the difference in the game.
Alexandria (6-13 second half, 15-38 overall) will be back in action tonight, Friday, in a home game at Knute Nelson Ballpark with a 7:05 first pitch against Mankato. It’s the second of a four-game series against the MoonDogs as the Blue Anchors return home on Sunday for a 1:05 p.m. first pitch to wrap up the series.
