Allen showcased in Great 8 tournament
Alexandria's Ben Allen was one of two goaltenders represented on the Section 6A-6AA team at the Ted Brill Great 8 hockey tournament this past weekend.
The Great 8 has provided high school seniors a chance to compete against other top players in the state of Minnesota at an annual tournament for more than 30 years. The event, which was held at the Wakota Arena in St. Paul on March 22-24, is designed to help develop the players' skills and showcase them to coaches and scouts at the college and junior hockey level.
Allen was the saves leader for his Section 6A-6AA team in a 6-2 win over Section 7A-7AA on Saturday. He played 27 minutes and turned aside all 17 shots he faced. Allen added 20 saves but gave up four goals in a 6-2 loss to Section 4A-4AA on Sunday after starting his weekend with 14 saves on 16 shots in a 6-4 win over Section 5A-5AA last Friday.
The three-day tournament is comprised of eight teams with nine forwards, six defensemen and two goalies making up each roster. A total of 20 players from the tournament will be selected to represent Minnesota in a National Invitational Tournament in Plymouth at a later date.
Allen was a full-time starter in net for Alexandria the past two years after taking over the role during his sophomore season. He helped the Cardinals to a state tournament appearance that winter.
