Alice Hovland, 72
Alice Veronica Hovland, 72, Okahumpka, Florida, died Sunday, August 10, 2014.
She was born September 15, 1941 in Georgetown, Grand Cayman, British West Indies. Her early school years were in Kingston, Jamaica, where she stayed with her aunt Elenora Bodden until 1954 when her mother Ianthy (Lola) Bodden married E.W. (Bud) Swanson of Alexandria.
In 1960 she graduated from Jefferson High School in Alexandria. She went on to graduate from Mindall Cain School of Cosmetology in Minneapolis in 1961.
It was in high school that she met her future husband, Glenn Hovland of Nelson. They were married on October 10, 1961 while Glenn was serving in the Air Force in Michigan.
Glenn had job opportunities requiring many moves, and with each one, Alice made a home for them. She assisted Glenn in the technical testing of fiber optic installations in many areas of the US. Over the years, Alice also worked in the retail industry, sold Avon and designed silk flower arrangements and other crafts. Alice and Glenn retired to Okahumpka in 2008.
Alice is survived by her husband, Glenn; sister, Anniemae Lindsey of Okahumpka; sister-in-law, Mary Hovland of Willmar; daughter, Erika (Chris) Johnson of St. Louis, Missouri; son, Gregory Hovland of Okahumpka; grandson, Geoffrey Johnson of Okahumpka; granddaughters, Sarah Johnson of Oxford, Mississippi, Grace and Hannah Hovland of Detroit Lakes; nephews; nieces; cousins; and good friends.
She was preceded in death by her father, Allenby Yates; mother, Lola Oswald; adopted father, Bud Swanson; sister, Consuela Ebanks; parents-in-law, Lester and Gunhild Hovland; and brother-in-law, Leon Hovland.
A private family service will be held in Okahumpka and Grand Cayman. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the American Diabetes Association.
