Alexandria tennis: Cardinals fall to Sartell 5-2
Alexandria managed wins at first singles and first doubles, but that was all the Cardinals could pick up as they fell to Sartell 5-2 Tuesday in Central Lakes Conference boys' tennis.
"What a great match on such a windy day," said head coach Dave Ronning. "The guys came out fighting on senior night at the Discovery courts.
"We honored our two seniors that are in our lineup. Jacob Strand, who has been playing mostly second doubles all season, and Gage Winger, who has been playing mostly first JV doubles."
The Cardinals picked up a three set win at first singles from Mark Kallevig, winning the first set 6-2, then dropping the second 2-6 before taking the deciding set 6-4.
"Mark played his best match of the season, winning in three sets," said his coach. "Devin Crowe lost a tough one at second singles, where he won the first set, lost the second and had a 5-3 lead in the third before he dropped it in a tiebreaker.
"Levi [Duwenhoegger] lost his first set and got an early 5-2 lead in the second before his opponent rattled off five straight games to claim the point,"
The Cardinals picked up straight set wins from first doubles team Brendan Holm and Mathias Burban 6-3, 6-3 for the only other win of the match.
Jacob Strand and Payton Grandgenett fell by the same score at second doubles.
"Nick [Partington] and Carl [Branch] played tough in both sets at third doubles (6-4, 7-5) but just couldn't win the big points when needed and lost a close match.
"The guys played well and it was a good outing for us," added Ronning. "Sartell is a solid team and we went toe-to-toe with them. It was especially nice to see Mark pick up that win at first singles. He has battled in that spot for most of the season and has little to show for it."
