Alexandria swimming and diving: Bowser is MVP
Kalli Bowser's senior year of Cardinal swimming proved to be one of her best, and she was rewarded for her efforts by being named the team's most valuable swimmer at the recent end of the year awards banquet.
Bowser, who was part of the Cardinals' state qualifying 200 medley relay team along with Hannah Eklund, Madalyn Winger and Beth Burnham, is number nine on the Alexandria all-time top-16 lists for the 100 free with a time of 56.02, and is seventh on the list of the 100 back times at 1:03.77.
Bowser finished the year with 297.5 points for the Cardinals, earning Central Lakes Academic All-Conference and CLC honorable mention, serving as one of the captains of the team.
Bowser, Eklund, Winger and Burnham competed at state and finished 23rd in the event with a time of 1:56.54.
Winger earned the hardest worker award for the team, scoring 234.5 points and earning CLC All-Conference honors.
She is also 16th on the all-time Cardinal list for the 500 free with a time of 5:47.52.
Burnham received the coach's award for her season that included Academic All-Conference honors as she also scored 166.5 points for the team and served as another of the Cardinals' team captains for 2012.
The Cardinal senior is 15th on the 50 free all-time list with a time of 26.31.
Heidi Moe received the most improved swimmer award and helped the team to a 7-3 record, helping reverse course for a team that was 1-9 two years ago and 2-8 last season.
"[It] was a big turnaround year for the Cards," said head coach Mark Storhaug. "[We] haven't had a season like this since 2006.
"In the CLC last year we were eighth overall and this year we were third. In Section 6A last year we were seventh; this year we were third.
"More kids are making a serious commitment to training hard so they can compete hard," he said. "We don't want to take any steps backward next year. The girls are going to have to stay athletically active over the next nine months, get stronger in the off-season and be in a better position to train harder and faster at the beginning of the season."
