Although the Cardinals allowed Moorhead to score first, Alexandria kept its game against the Spuds under control for a 7-5 win.

Kaila Dewanz, in her first varsity start on the mound, allowed Moorhead a run in the top of the first on a hit and an error, but settled in as her offense took the lead in the bottom of the inning as Jess Syvrud singled in Sara Bruzek, and Jana Roste scored on a sacrifice bunt by Dani Strater.

The Cardinals added to their lead in the bottom of the second as Joycelin Steidl opened the frame with a triple, then scored on a double by Erin Ann Schueler, who also scored on a Natalie Berglin double. Bruzek singled Berlin home for the final run of the inning.

Things got a little dicey for Alexandria at that point as the Spuds picked up a run in the third and two more in the fourth to cut the Cardinals' lead to just one, but again the offense did its job, bringing home a pair of runs on a Spud error.

Moorhead made a final stab at taking the lead in seventh, scoring once, but Cardinal reliever Taylor Ellingson got out of the jam, getting the win.

Dewanz pitched the first three innings, giving up four runs while walking two. Ellingson got the win in the final four frames.

"Kaila did a nice job, getting her first varsity start [and] keeping the Moorhead batters of stride," said head coach Randy Albers.

Bruzek led the Cardinal offense with a pair of hits.

Alexandria 13, Sartell 5

The Cardinals' Central Lakes Conference record remained intact as Alexandria's Ellingson kept the Sabres on their heels Tuesday night, allowing just five hits.

Sara Bruzek and Taylor Ellingson got the Cardinals started with a single and a double, and both runners scored as Dani Carlson tripled them home with two outs on the board.

Sartell had a big second inning, scoring all five of its runs on two hits and two Cardinal errors, but Alexandria added three more runs in the third, three in the fourth and a whopping seven in the sixth to put the game away.

Ellingson had three doubles in the game to bring home four runs, with Carlson adding an RBI triple. Natalie Berglin and Anna Lee each drove in a run.
