Defeating St. Cloud Tech 11-1 and 7-4 Friday on the road gave the Cardinals their first Central Lakes Conference title since 2008.

Alexandria's 13-1 record was two games better than second place Rocori, which came in at 11-3.

The two wins gave the Redbirds the No. 3 seed in the Section 8AAA playoffs that begin tonight, Wednesday, at Woodlands Elementary fields where the Cardinals face the winning of the Big Lake-Monticello game that takes place just prior to their contest.

"We are all very proud of what the girls have accomplished so far and now turn out attention to making a run in the section, hopefully," said Cardinal head coach Randy Albers.

The first game went to the Cardinals easily as they won 11-1 behind four straight singles from Sarah Bruzek, Jana Roste, Taylor Ellingson and Jessica Syvrud.

They added five more in the second on a pair of walks, two Tiger errors and a single by Syvrud, then increased their lead with two in the fourth as Syvrud and Dani Carlson singled and came home on a bases-clearing double by Emily Kuennen.

In the fifth, Alexandria capped its game with two runs as Kaila Dewanz and Bruzek singled and were driven home on Ellingson's double.

In the second game, the Cardinals had more of a contest as St. Cloud Tech struck early, scoring a run on a pair of Alexandria errors in the first.

The Redbirds used a triple by Kuennen and a fielder's choice in the fourth for their two runs in that inning, but Tech tied the game in the fifth with a run of their own.

Bruzek and Carlson both doubled in the bottom half of the inning, with Bruzek scoring on a passed ball, leaving the Cards up 3-2.

"The big blow came in the sixth when Taylor Ellingson stepped to the plate with two outs and bases loaded, and hit a home run over the left field fence," said Albers.

Ellingson also picked up the win, her 15th of the year.
