Donna Sannan received her free car just in time for Christmas. Sannan works full time and needed a reliable vehicle. She also shares her home with two relatives who do not have transportation.

By removing transportation barriers and providing car care, the DCCCP fosters independence for Douglas County Minnesota residents. The organization receives donated cars, in-kind repair services and financial donations from individual donors, service clubs, corporations and faith communities that support helping people find reliable transportation so they can seek and maintain steady employment.

“The decision to help was like pushing the ‘easy button’ when we received a request from the Douglas County Car Care Program to donate,” said Steve Schabel, chief of marketing and sales, Alexandria Industries. “Most everyone at some point in their life struggles financially and we are grateful to be able to help. Compassion is one of our corporate values. We want to be able to be there for those in need.”

The DCCCP receives donated cars, fixes them and then gives them to needy families. If a family owns a car but cannot afford the costs to repair it, it will fix it for them.

“Without a reliable vehicle, families have to depend on others for transportation needs to maintain employment, get groceries or medical care. Many times the children are left out of the normal activities that are available to most children in the community,” said Clifford Korkowski, executive director, DCCCP. “Historically, people without reliable transportation lose their employment because they are unable to get to work.”

The DCCCP received nearly $110,000 in financial donations in 2013. It hopes to raise $200,000 in 2014 to be able to help even more people this year. To donate, call (320) 460-7911 or visit
