Alexandria nordic girls finish second, boys third in CLC
The Alexandria girls Nordic ski team took second place and the boys finished in third on a frigid and blustery day at the Central Lakes Conference championship meet on Thursday at Andes Tower Hills.
The Alexandria boys and Brainerd ended up in a second place tie in team points, but a tiebreaker awarded the Warriors sole possession of second.
Although both Alexandria teams would have liked to finish in first, head coach Jeremy Rapp was still pleased with his skiers’ performances against some strong CLC opponents.
“It was still really close,” Rapp said. “The goal is obviously to win conference but they weren’t too far back.”
Pat Flynn led the Cardinals with a second place finish in the boys classic race. Eric Branch was right behind him in the boys classic race with a third place finish.
In the boys skate race, Carl Branch led Alexandria with a third place finish. Dalton Struck finished in eighth place in the skate race and Casey Call finished in 10th.
Becca Mateer and Julia Sieling both took third place to lead the Cardinals girls skiers.
Mateer took third in the girls classic race, and right behind her was Britt Hurlen in sixth place and Lauren Hagstrom in eighth place.
In the girls skate race Sieling took third place, Ellie Hurlen took seventh and JeAnna Miller finished in eighth.
The Cardinals boys felt strong about their performances in the CLC race, even though they ended up taking third. Alexandria was less than five team points away from first place.
“We did very well,” Carl Branch said. “We knew it would be close, but it doesn’t hurt to try for that top spot because we were definitely in range.”
The Cardinals’ next race is the Section 8 championships this Tuesday. That race will be taking place at the Maplelag Resort outside of Detroit Lakes.
