The Alexandria Legion baseball team knew it was having some struggles with runners on base heading into a doubleheader against Detroit Lakes on Tuesday evening at Knute Nelson Ballpark.

Although the weather was cool for July, Alexandria’s bats were not as they drove in a combined 18 runs on their way to the two-game sweep. The home team won the first game on the 10-run rule as it grabbed a 10-0 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning and followed that with an 8-3 victory to break out of a five game losing streak.

After struggling to score runs over that five game stretch prior to Tuesday, Alexandria made sure to devote some extra time to getting back on track.

“We’ve been struggling lately, so we took some extra time hitting BP at practice,” said Kris Setterstrom, who played both outfield and catcher in the doubleheader Tuesday. “I just think we’re starting to see it a little better and maybe taking a couple more pitches deeper in the count and getting better swings.”

The work appeared to pay off as Alexandria took a 6-0 lead right away in the first game against Detroit Lakes. Setterstrom delivered a three-run double in the inning while Blake Stockert and Parker Revering also drove in one RBI each. This was more than enough as Stockert, Parker Bowden and Micah Hedstrom combined to shut out Detroit Lakes.

The second game was a little closer in the early stages as Alexandria held a 4-3 lead heading to the plate in the bottom of the fourth inning. But two insurance runs in both the fourth and fifth innings helped break the game open.

Mitch Thompson led the Alexandria offense as he went 4-for-4 in the game with three runs scored and a RBI. Revering also drove in two RBIs in the game.

Travis Krueger pitched the first four innings, followed by Chris Leary for two innings of relief and Spencer Lucas for one.

The offensive production was a welcomed sight for the Alexandria players as they appeared to break out of the recent slump.

“We had runners on base multiple times with zero outs and ended up not scoring runs,” Thompson said about the offense’s recent cold streak. “So we really forced hitting the ball, putting it in play with runners on base to try and score some runs.”

Head coach Jake Munsch said it was nice to have the offense turn it around on Tuesday and pick up two wins.

“I felt we played better today,” Munsch said. “DL is not the strongest team, but just for our guys to come out and hit the ball is a big difference for us. As we got runners in scoring position we got our hits and scored the runs.”

FOURTH OF JULY TOURNAMENT

Friday marks the beginning of the Alexandria Legion’s Fourth of July baseball tournament at Knute Nelson, with the action wrapping up on Sunday.

One game that the team is looking forward to playing is against Oakdale at 7:30 p.m. this Friday. Last year Alexandria scored nine runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to beat Oakdale 15-14.

“It’s going to be the game of the year, probably,” Setterstrom said.
