Alexandria Legion Post 87 wins eighth straight
The Fat Daddy’s Post 87 Alexandria Legion baseball team moved its winning streak to eight games on Tuesday night with a sweep against Thief River Falls in Carlos.
Post 87 did it by showing some resolve in each of the two games. They got a walk-off two-run single from Toby Helgeson in the nightcap to win 5-4 after trailing going into their final at-bat. They also won 9-6 in game one after Thief River Falls rallied to make things close late.
“It’s nice to see us battling and doing what we need to do to win the games,” head coach Jake Munsch said. “We’re hitting the ball really well. Kris Setterstrom is doing an outstanding job. He’s really stepped up. Mitch Thompson is our leader and tries to get everybody going. Things are coming together, I think. Hopefully we can keep this rolling.”
Micah Hedstrom got the start in game two and did what his coaches were asking of him. He went three innings and gave Alexandria a chance by scattering five hits and two walks on his way to allowing two earned runs. Casey Hammerback threw three strong innings of relief, allowing just one hit and one run. Blake Stockert got the win after allowing a run and striking out three in one frame.
“Micah Hedstrom got his first start and did a good job of keeping us in the game,” Munsch said.
Helgeson’s walk-off winner was part of a big game for him. He finished 3-for-4 and added a run scored. Thompson and Parker Revering were both 1-for-3 with a run scored, while Grant Toivonen, Blake Stockert and Cody McLaughlin each added a hit.
Travis Krueger got the start in game one as Post 87 built him an early lead. Krueger went five innings and allowed just two runs on six hits and one walk. He struck out two. Thief River Falls battled back with three runs in the sixth inning, but Alexandria answered with three runs of its own in the bottom of the sixth to secure the win.
Setterstrom had a big game at the plate with four hits. Revering was 2-for-3 with three runs, while Helgeson and McLaughlin each added two hits and a run scored.
Post 87 will now test itself against a strong field at the annual Gopher Classic in Eagan this weekend. Alexandria will take on Stillwater in the opening game on Friday at 1:30 p.m. before playing Eagan at 4:30 that same day.
“We’ll be able to size ourselves up against other teams in the state,” Munsch said. “It’s a fun tournament. We all look forward to it, and hopefully we can come out of there with some wins.”
