Alexandria girls' track and field: Cards capture 8AA title
The Alexandria girls' track and field team will once again make its presence felt at the Class AA state meet this weekend after capturing a Section 8AA team title last week over the two-day event.
The Cardinals edged Bemidji by just one point to take home a championship. Alexandria finished with 86 points, while the Lumberjacks were right behind at 85 and Moorhead rounded out the top three with 74 points.
The Alexandria girls have already established themselves as a strong AA program after finishing second in the team standings at state each of the past three seasons. Now the Cardinals will have quite a presence at Hamline University again as they get set to compete in six different events.
Freshman Wensia Johnson will be in three of those events and looks well positioned to try to capture a state title in a different event after winning the 200-meter dash in 2012. Johnson won the 100-meter dash (12.03 finals) and the long jump (18-08) at the section meet to qualify in both events. She would have likely done the same in the 200 but a false start took her out of the running for the race in the finals.
Junior Mady Urman stepped up to pace Alexandria in the 200 in Johnson's absence. Urman got eight big points for her team and punched a ticket to state with a second-place time of 26.95 seconds. Both Urman and Johnson will also run in the 4x100 at state with Gabby Koel and Briquelle Bowden after the group won that event in 49.60 seconds.
Bowden was one of three Alexandria athletes to punch a ticket to state in the first day of the section meet last Wednesday. She took first in the high jump with a leap of 5-04. Megan Hasz also took second in the 3,200-meter run that day with a time of 11:06.57 to punch her ticket to state. Her sister, Bethany, finished less than half a second away from the state qualifying time in the 3,200. She was third at sections with a time of 11:07.21.
Megan will get things started at the state meet for Alexandria with the first event on Friday. The girls' 3,200-meter finals will kick things off at 9 that morning. Class AA will then get the final day started on Saturday with the 4x800-meter relay at 9.
