Alexandria girls' golf: Novotny leads Cards to first in CLC meet
The Alexandria girls' golf team has been a consistent front-runner in the Central Lakes Conference and this year should be no different.
The Cardinals return an experienced lineup and played like it in winning the first CLC meet of the season on Monday. Alexandria shot a 325, 12 shots better than second place Rocori on the Spartans' home course.
Senior Brynn Novotny led the charge behind a 79 that tied her for medalist honors. Novotny carded a 38 on the back to anchor a lineup that had four players finish in the top six.
"Brynn really had a good day striking the ball," head coach Tim Zupfer said. "If not for a sub-par day of putting, she would have really gone low."
Three of her teammates weren't far behind. Amanda Bigger, Emily Thul and Natalie Amundson all shot 82 to finish tied for fourth individually. Bigger put a 45 on the front behind her to shoot a 37 on the back after some improved putting.
Thul followed up a strong showing in the season opener by avoiding any big scores on Monday. She shot 40, 42 and never carded anything higher than a bogey. Amundson added two birdies to her round as she shot 41 on both the front and the back.
Bridget Amundson shot an 87 (45, 42) to finish 16th overall and Shelby Iverson rounded out Alexandria's top six with a 91 (48, 43).
The Cardinals are searching for their 11th CLC title in the last 12 years this spring. They got off to a good start before heading to Fergus Falls last night, Thursday, with the hopes of adding to their conference lead.
