Alexandria girls' basketball: Bowser defense leads Cardinal girls

Holding its opponents to just 41.9 points per game, the Cardinal girls' basketball team produced the best defense in the state in Class AAA, leading Alexandria to an 18-9 overall record and a 13-3 league mark, earning them Central Lakes Conference runner-up honors for 2012-2013.

Kalli Bowser was a big part of that defense, and her play game-in and game-out earned her defensive player of the year honors from her teammates.

Bowser finished the season with 121 defensive rebounds and 75 on offense for a team high 196 overall. She became a member of the 200-point club, finishing the season with 259.

Bowser proved to be a well-rounded player as she was also named to the Academic All-State team for having a grade point average of 3.8 or above.

Amanda Christianson was named offensive player of the year and also received the playmaker of the year award from her teammates.

She was second to Bowser in rebounds with 99, was second in assists with 60 and had 61 steals to finish second in that category as well.

Christianson became a member of the 400-point club this season as she reached 431 points, leading her team in free throw percentage at 86 on 104-for-121, and leading in three-point shooting with 33.7 percent.

She was named to the All-State honorable mention team for her efforts.

Karly Betterman was selected as the hardest worker by her team, leading the Cardinals in assists with 61 and steals with 65.

She also reached the 200-point club with 216 and led the Cardinals in two-point shooting percentage at 45.

Jess Syvrud earned the award for the best attitude/TOP 20 and was also an Academic All-State member, and Alyssa Freiderich received the most improved player award.
