Alexandria Evening Lions to celebrate 50 years
The Alexandria Evening Lions Club will celebrate its 50th anniversary on Monday, May 13 at the Broadway Ballroom, Alexandria.
The club was chartered in May 1963 with 34 members. At present, 67 men and women are members.
Throughout the past 50 years, the club, through its fundraising projects, has provided sight and hearing programs for the community.
The club has also been a benefactor to the Caring Hands Dental Clinic, Douglas County Food Shelf, YMCA, Boy Scouts, and Leader Dogs for the Blind.
A major activity of the club is the Cross Country Meet of Champions held in conjunction with School District 206. The event just concluded its 40th year.
Other major activities include partnering with LaGrand Township at Lake Latoka Beach, operating a food and bingo stand at the Douglas County Fair, biannual cleanup of County Road 82 West and, its latest venture, waffle making with and for other organizations in the community.
The Evening Lions meet the second and fourth Mondays of each month at 6 p.m. at Broadway Ballroom. For more information about membership, club projects or donations, contact Larry Ortloff, club president, at (320) 763-8477.
