The Cardinal dance team is excited for an opportunity to dance at the biggest venue any of the girls have ever danced in tonight.

The Alexandria junior varsity and varsity teams will perform a kick routine at Target Center before the Timberwolves game against the Washington Wizards. The tip for that game is set for 7 p.m.

0 Talk about it

“They were very excited and nervous,” head coach Christine Reilly said of her dancers. “Their initial reaction was excitement, but some of them were nervous. They’re all excited now, and it’s just a great opportunity for them.”

Reilly was contacted by someone from the Timberwolves in September and offered this opportunity. Since then, it’s been a motivating factor for this group as they work to make sure they put on a great performance in front of a big crowd.

“This is really keeping them on their toes,” Reilly said. “It’s been a nice goal for us. We’ve really talked about it, ‘What are our goals form the Timberwolves game? What certain things do we want to have mastered and achieved so we know we’re going to have a great performance there?’ ”

It’s something that should only help this team going forward. Alexandria has high aspirations this season with three teams from the section able to qualify for the state meet. The venue for the state meet is the Target Center, so getting a taste of dancing there could serve as some extra motivation.

“It’s kind of dangling the carrot a little bit more in front of them,” Reilly said. “We’ve got a strong varsity team that’s really making a strong push that’s hopeful to advance to state. Then just confidence wise, I think it helps them. I think they will be very nervous but to work through that and overcome it will be great.”

The Cardinals have to battle through a very strong Central Lakes Conference before reaching the section meet. That, coupled with dancing at the Timberwolves game, is a good opportunity to improve down the road.

“It’s a big deal and competitively, I think it’s going to help us out through January,” Reilly said. “They’re really focused and really working hard for this performance [tonight]. That’s only going to make them stronger going into other competitions in January.”
