Alexandria boys' tennis: Rainout leaves Cards with loss, no decision

Email

Rain caused an early finish to Alexandria's match against host Detroit Lakes Thursday after the Cardinals had fallen to Thief River Falls 7-0 in the first match of the day.

"The Cards were run over by the Prowlers in the first match where our singles players were dominated and our doubles teams fought hard, but could not produce a 'W'," said head coach Dave Ronning.

"Jake [Strand] and Payton [Grandgenett] had the closest match where they lost in a third set tiebreaker, and Brendan [Holm] and Mathias [Burban] kept it close all the way through, but couldn't prevail.

"In the Detroit Lakes match, we could have had a final decision if the rain could have held off for another five minutes or so," he added. "We had two points to our name and were one game away at two other spots when the rain came."

OTTERS ACE CARDINALS

A tough way to end their Central Lakes Conference schedule, the Cardinal boys' tennis team fell to the Otters 6-1 Wednesday afternoon, leaving them with a 4-7 record.

"Our lone win came from Jake [Strand] and Payton [Grandgenett] at second doubles," said head coach Dave Ronning. "Jake and Payton have been a good doubles team all season, and they have shown improvement as the season has passed. Last night was an example of that.

"Eric Branch lost a close match at fourth singles where he won the first set, only to drop the next two. Eric ran out of gas, so to speak, and could not answer what his opponent threw at him as the match went along.

"Devin Crowe played hard at second singles and made a bit of a run in the second set, but could not overcome his very tough opponent," added the coach. "Fergus has a very good team, and they played very well last night, so my hat is off to them. It is not that we played so bad, it was more that Fergus is very solid and plays tough tennis."
