Not every sport has been able to head outside yet, but the Cardinal boys' tennis team battled the wind and cool weather to hand Monticello a 6-1 loss in the season opener for both teams.

"It was cool and windy, but the courts were dry, and it is April, so we were ready to go," said head coach Dave Ronning. "It was our first time on courts outside this spring, and we were a bit rusty, but all in all, the guys did some nice things and came home victorious."

The Cardinals picked up three wins at singles, then swept through the doubles matches for the 6-1 victory.

"Mathias Burban suffered the only loss at first singles," said Ronning. "Mark Kallevig won in straight sets at second singles, where he came from behind in the first set to win a tiebreaker and then 6-4 in the second set.

"Freshman Devin Crowe won easily at third singles, and Jacob Strand won a hard-fought three-setter at fourth singles.

"Jake lost the first set 4-6, only to come back and win the next two sets 3 and 2," Ronning added. "I was very proud of the way Jake kept his composure after losing the first set. He figured some things out and picked up a good win."

In first doubles actions, Brendan Holm and Levi Duwenhoegger won their first match 6-1, then fell in set two 2-6. They battled through set three for a tiebreaker victory 7-6 (3).

"Eric Branch and Payton Grandgenett won easily at second doubles, while Nick Partington and Andrew Storm pulled out a tough win at third doubles," said the coach.

"A nail biter of a match looked to be a sleeper when you look at the final score. A few breaks here and there and the results could have been very different.

"Devin Crowe stood out in the singles lineup where he was in control from the very start," Ronning pointed out. "Eric and Payton stood out in the doubles lineup, winning by the same score as Devin, 6-1, 6-2."
