After a 6-1 win over Mandan, North Dakota to open play, the Cardinal boys' hockey team dropped their two following games to finish fourth at the Roseau Rams Holiday Hockey Classic over the weekend.

Alexandria allowed Mandan, North Dakota to score the first goal of the game Thursday night, but came back firing to claim a 6-1 win in the opening round of the Roseau boys' Holiday Hockey Classic Thursday.

Mandan scored just one minute into the opening period, but Cardinal senior forward Jack Wensman evened things up off an assist by Kevin Finley with four minutes gone from the clock.

From there it was all Alexandria as the Cardinals scored three times in the second period and twice more in the third, all while holding Mandan scoreless as Card goalie Ben Allen made 30 stops.

Tom Schmidt put the go-ahead goal on the board at 12:37 of the second period on a feed from Wensman and Matt Resch on a power play, with Patrick Leary giving Alexandria a two-goal lead at 14:08 off an assist by Brady Bast.

Aaron Steidl capped off the period with a power play goal at 16:16 on an assist from Leary, leaving the Cardinals with a 4-1 lead.

In the third, Resch slapped the puck home just 44 seconds into the period on a Schmidt assists, then Alec Wosepka took the pass from Levi McFarlane and Parker Revering to finish off the night, scoring at the 2:32 mark of the third.

ROSEAU 3, ALEXANDRIA 2

Class AA's No. 18 Rams outshot the Cardinals 41-19, but Alexandria goalie Ben Allen was stellar in the Cardinals' 3-2 loss to Roseau, stopping 38 shots sent his way.

Roseau quickly opened the first period with a goal, scoring with just 55 seconds off the clock to put the Cardinals on their heels, but the Redbirds evened the match at 9:51 as Ryan Marciniak scored off assists from Parker Revering and Christian Canavati.

The Rams skated to the lead with a goal in the second period, then went up by two in the third period before Jack Wensman scored Alexandria's lone goal of the period at 12:17 to cut the lead back to one.

The Cardinals were unable to cut into the lead, falling 3-2.

CHISAGO LAKES 2, ALEXANDRIA 1

Alexandria outshot the Tigers 28-19 in the third place game on Saturday, but couldn't hold off Chisago Lakes, falling 2-1.

Neither team scored in the first period and Chisago Lakes took the lead with a goal just 31 seconds into the second period.

The Cardinals tied the game at 5:12 in the third period as Ryan Mariciniak scored on a feed from Tom Schmidt, but the Alexandria defense could not hold off the Tigers and Chisago Lakes scored the game winner at 6:38.

Ben Allen took the loss, stopping 17 shots on goal.

The Cardinals will be at Fergus Falls on Friday.
