Alexandria boys' golf: Knotted at the top
With four teams tightly packed at the top of the Central Lakes Conference boys' golf race, Alexandria took advantage of Nick Brundell's timely medalist round to surge from third in the standings to a tie for first with St. Cloud Tech.
"It was a windy day, as usual, but warm, almost too warm," said Cardinal coach Rick Larson. "But, the Alex team came to play.
"Several did not start out well in the wind, but got it going, especially when the winds started to die down."
Brundell posted a 2-under-par 70 on Willmar's Eagle Creek Golf Course Monday, leading Alexandria to a three-stroke victory over the Tigers of St. Cloud Tech.
"Nick had his best outing of the year with his 2-under-par," said Larson, "hopefully a sign of things to come."
The win set up a showdown in the CLC finale next Tuesday at Wapicada Golf Course in Sauk Rapids.
"This sets up a great battle for the CLC championship," said the Cardinal coach. "Winner take all, except it happens to be the home course of the team we are tied with - Tech."
It wasn't Brundell alone that clinched the win. Lukas Bigger fired a 4-over-par 76 to tie for third, with Aaron Johnson adding a round of 78.
"Lukas started out bogey, triple bogey, then went even on the last 16 holes," said Larson. "Aaron Johnson, getting some more varsity CLC experience, scrambled well on his last three holes to grind out a good score of 78."
Cole Haugen added an 81, Dan Hennessey an 85 and Nic Hanson a 93.
"Cole's 81 included five 3-putts, but it is one of the better fourth scores we have counted this season," the coach pointed out. "Dan, seeing his first ever varsity CLC action, had an eagle and had a respectable 85.
"Nic Hanson had too many double bogeys and just plain never got into a rhythm."
