Alexandria beats Willmar for ninth straight win

A 5-2 victory for the Alexandria girls’ tennis team over visiting Willmar on Thursday improved their season-high winning streak to nine games.

The Cardinals’ doubles teams led them to the victory by sweeping Willmar. Alexandria also picked up wins at third and fourth singles.

“There were some tough matches tonight, but in the end it was a good team win for our girls,” head coach Dave Ronning said.

Abby Telander and Jenna Steffl came from behind to pull out a win at third doubles yesterday for the Cardinals. They lost the first set 4-6 and trailed in the second set before coming back to win in a tiebreaker.

“We talked about playing our style of tennis and not letting the opponent dictate play,” Ronning said. “Abby and Jenna pulled it together just in time, winning the second set in a breaker and the third set easily 6-1.”

Marissa Wheeler and Rachel Sjostrand blanked their opponents 6-0, 6-0 at first doubles, and at second doubles Kim Wilkins and Kerri Wilkins won 6-1, 6-1.

In singles, Ellie Bergstrand was unable to close her match after she won the first set and was up 3-2 in the second. Her first singles opponent came back and won the second set 7-5 and then took the third set 6-4.

The Cardinals’ Carly Snell had to default due to illness at second singles after she had won the first set and trailed 5-6 in the second.

Bria Schueler picked up a two-set victory at third singles 7-5, 6-2, as did Hannah Vickstrom at fourth singles 6-0, 6-2.

The Cardinals were next scheduled to play Central Lakes Conference opponent Rocori on Tuesday in Alexandria.
