Many of the best horseshoe pitchers in the state will be in Alexandria this weekend for the state tournament at the Runestone Community Center for four days.

Action will get started on Friday and run through Monday as state champions are crowned in Men's, Junior, Women's and Elderly Divisions. An awards banquet will also be held on Sunday, September 1 at Broadway Ballroom in Alexandria.

There are plenty of pitchers from the area who will take part in the state tournament this weekend. Evansville's Janet Larson is a defending Women's Division champion. She will go for a second straight title when she takes on a talented field at 10 a.m. this coming Monday. Alan Larson is also in the men's championship, which will get going at the same time on Monday.

He will have to try to knock off perennial power and defending state champion Dale Lipovsky of Apple Valley. Lipovsky has won 29 state titles over the course of his long career with his first coming in 1973. He twice had runs of six straight state championships from 1997 through 2002 and 2004 through 2009.
