Alex track earns CLC championship
The Alexandria girls’ track and field team earned points in every event but one on Thursday to finish with a Central Lakes Conference championship at the CLC outdoor championships in Willmar.
Wensia Johnson led the Cardinals by taking home CLC titles in multiple events. Johnson earned firsts in the 100 meter dash, 200 meter dash and the long jump. Her 100 meter time of 12.02 also broke a conference record of 12.10 she previously shared with St. Cloud Apollo’s Janet Knopik from 2001.
Bethany Hasz, Megan Hasz and JeAnna Miller also earned conference titles. Bethany Hasz took first place in the 1,600 meter run and Megan Hasz finished first in the 3,200 meter run. JeAnna Miller’s high jump mark of 5-02.00 also earned her a championship.
With all of the athletes able to participate in the CLC championship contest, head coach Meghan Orgeman-Crumb said it was enjoyable to watch the action unfold.
“With each event that passed, it was fun to see all of the pieces come together,” she said. “This was the first track meet where we have had every athlete on the track, and it was fun to see just how strong our team has worked to become.”
The Cardinals had one relay team and 11 individuals earn all-conference awards. Mady Urman picked up a total of three, all consisting of second place finishes in the 100, 200 and 400 meter dashes. Bethany Hasz added a second place finish in the 800 meter run to her first in the 1,600 meter run.
The Alexandria 4x100 meter relay team of Tahlia Bowden, Tayler Kaufman, Lea Huss and Karly Betterman grabbed second place.
Alexandria also picked up honorable mention awards from eight individuals and one relay team.
Betterman held two of those honorable mention awards by finishing in sixth in the 100 meter hurdles and fifth in the 300 meter hurdles. Kaufman finished in fifth place in both the 100 and 200 meter dash races for two honorable mentions. JeAnna Miller took sixth in the long jump and Kiyana Miller took sixth in the 1,600 meter run.
In the throwing events, Cheyenne Hendrickson finished fourth in the shot put and sixth in the discus.
The 4x200 relay team of Johnson, Syri Williams, Huss and Kelby Olson-Rodel also grabbed third place.
