Alex tennis preview: Cards return versatile group

The Alexandria boys’ tennis team hopes seven returning letter winners will help it improve on a 7-8 overall record from 2013.

The team is returning most of its varsity players from last season, only losing Jake Strand, Eric Branch and Carl Brach. Returning letter winners include seniors Brendan Holm and Mark Kallevig, juniors Levi Duwenhoegger, Payton Grandgenett, Nick Partington and Andrew Storm; and sophomore Devon Crowe.

“We are looking for our returning lettermen to step up and play big roles,” head coach Dave Ronning said. “Their leadership will determine the success of this team.”

One of the strengths the Cardinals will have this season is the versatility of their lineup. Most of the players can be used in both the singles and doubles positions in the lineup.

“Our strength will be our versatility and the togetherness of this team,” Ronning said.

Ronning expects the top teams in the conference to be St. Cloud Tech, Brainerd and Fergus Falls, and the top teams in the section to include St. Cloud Tech, Brainerd and Becker.
