It’s not often that the Rocori baseball team has just one win with only a week left in the season, but that’s the case this year for the rebuilding Spartans.

Alexandria added to that by sweeping a doubleheader with Rocori last Thursday. The Cardinals won game two 11-5 after winning the opener 9-4. The two wins moved them to 14-4 overall and upped their conference record to 11-1. The Spartans fell to 1-11 overall and 1-8 in the CLC.

The Cardinals jumped all over Rocori in both games, including scoring seven runs in the first inning of the nightcap. Cody McLaughlin had a big game with two doubles and two RBIs. Mitch Thompson drove in three runs, while Toby Helgeson continued his strong season with three hits and two RBIs. Grant Toivonen had four walks and scored twice.

Dan Kuhn got the start in game two. He went three innings, allowing just three hits and striking out one in three shutout innings. Parker Bowden got the win in four frames, allowing one earned run and striking out three.

Game one was much of the same as Alexandria led 8-0 after two innings. The Cardinals had just four hits in the game but 10 Rocori walks were a big reason why. Thompson delivered the big hit of the night with a three-RBI double. Blake Stockert also drew four walks and scored twice.

Kuhn worked 2 2/3 innings of no-hit relief on the mound. He struck out two after coming in for starter Jake Booth. Booth worked 4 1/3 innings, allowing four runs on five hits, while striking out three.

Alexandria has a big CLC game at home tonight, Wednesday, against second-place Brainerd (12-2, 9-2 CLC) to wrap up the regular season with a 4 p.m. first pitch. A win would guarantee the Cardinals an outright CLC title if they could beat Sauk Rapids-Rice last night, Tuesday.
