Alexandria advanced to the single-elimination championship round of the event that features just 16 teams. The Gopher Classic is the largest American Legion tournament in the United States with a total of 96 teams competing at 16 different sites around the Twin Cities metro area.

Post 87 won its pool with a 4-0 record through Sunday. Alexandria beat West Fargo 5-4 on Sunday to wrap up pool play after beating Giant Valley (9-4), Eagan (6-2) and Stillwater (5-2) on Friday and Saturday. Alexandria was on a 12-game winning streak after the four wins over the weekend.

“We’re playing really well,” head coach Jake Munsch said before his team got set to play on Monday. “We are getting good pitching but not with many strikeouts. I think our defense has only had maybe three errors, so we’re playing good defense. We’ve pitched really well and gotten timely hits.”

Alexandria used a four-run fifth inning to secure the win over West Fargo on Sunday. Mitch Thompson and Grant Toivonen both had two hits and combined to score three runs.

Mitch Thompson, Grant Toivonen, Toby Helgeson and Parker Revering all had two hits against Giant Valley on Saturday and combined for seven runs. That was plenty for Parker Bowden. He went all seven innings on the mound and allowed four runs on six hits and no walks. He struck out three.

Alexandria used four runs in the fourth inning against Eagan to help secure its second win on Friday. Thompson went six innings for the win in that game as he scattered four hits and four walks but allowed just one run.

Bowden and Casey Hammerback led the offense with two hits apiece. Thompson also went 1-for-3 and scored two runs.

Post 87 got a strong start from Blake Stockert in the tournament opening win over Stillwater. The lefty went all seven innings and tossed a three-hitter. He allowed just the one earned run and walked nobody, while striking out four.

Thompson and Bowden both went 3-for-3 at the plate. Helgeson was 1-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored.

Alexandria was scheduled to take on a team from Ohio with a 40-13 record to open up the single-elimination format of the tournament on Monday. The winner of the Gopher Classic had to win four games through Monday and Tuesday.
