Alex football falls to Moorhead
Moorhead 28, Alexandria 12
The Alexandria football team moved the ball pretty well in the season opener against Moorhead, but it was the Spuds who came away with a 28-12 win after scoring in all four quarters.
The Cardinals opened things up with a 76-yard touchdown run by senior quarterback John Vogeler on their second play of the game. Moorhead responded with the next two touchdowns before the half and took a 14-6 lead into the break.
The Spuds continued to build a lead with a touchdown in each of the next two quarters before the Cardinals got a fourth-quarter score on a 14-yard pass from Vogeler to Kris Setterstrom. Vogeler finished the night 8-of-20 passing for 155 yards. The Cardinals also ran for 213 yards as a team.
"We did some things really well," head coach Mike Empting said. "But it's early. Moorhead is a good team."
Moorhead's Jade Lawrence ran for 94 yards on 14 carries with a fumble recovery in his first start as he tries to replace Chase Morlock, who ran for 1,800 yards and 30 touchdowns last year. Quarterback Tyler Eidsness is also replacing former signal caller Aaron Lien. Eidsness was 6-for-6 passing for 91 yards and a touchdown, along with a 10-yard touchdown run and an interception on defense.
"We've heard about what we were losing a lot in the off-season," Eidsness told Chris Murphy of the Fargo Forum on Friday night. "Those were great guys. They were the heart and soul of the team last last year. That's why we worked hard in the off-season to fill their spots. I think we did it."
