The Alexandria dance team finished its season strong on Saturday by taking fifth place in kick and ninth place in jazz at the Section 4AA competition.

The fifth place finish in the kick division was the highest result for the Cardinals ever in section competition. Reaching this goal made the team happy after an up and down season full of injuries and illnesses.

“The performance was amazing,” head coach Christine Reilly said. “High energy, high kicks, and to top it off, no mistakes. The girls were overwhelmed with emotion afterwards, many of them in tears, because they knew it was their very best.”

The Cardinals’ ninth place finish in the jazz division was also rewarding after Reilly said their timing and energy were excellent as they executed their technical skills. The team’s five seniors, Emily Haan, Alexis Kokett, Kenzie Stark, Shelby Steidl and Samantha Winther, helped lead the team through the high points and the low points of the season.

“They never gave up hope or quit working hard when the going was tough throughout this season, and in the end, it all came together for them,” Reilly said.

Three of the 13 teams in Alexandria’s section qualified for the state tournament. Sartell, St. Cloud Cathedral and Sauk Rapids each advanced to the state tournament in both the kick and jazz divisions. The state dance tournament is February 14 and 15 at the Target Center.
