Sartell-St. Stephen won the team title with 106 points, while Brainerd and Willmar rounded out the top three with 99.50 and 97 points, respectively.

“We had a lot of young athletes, newcomers to the team in their first competition ever,” head coach Mike Empting said. “The boys team has a lot of great student athletes on the squad this season, and it has been a terrific start to the season.”

Senior Austin Thom got things going for the Cardinals on Saturday with a second-place finish in the 3,200-meter run. Thom finished in a time of 10:43.05, while fellow senior Trent Piepenburg gave Alexandria two top-eight finishes in the event after taking fifth in 10:56.47.

Senior Mitch Peck was next in line for a second-place finish as he completed the 60-meter hurdles in 9.00 seconds. Aaron Steidl used a personal-best throw of 52-04 in the shot put to finish second, while the 4x800 relay team of Brandon Jerde, Jimmy Pfeffer, Grant Rudolph and Colton Sailor were also second in a time of 8:54.05.

Alexandria had 10 total athletes finish with top-eight results. Colton Sailor had a fourth-place finish in the 800-meter run in a time of 2:15.52. The 4x400 meter relay team of Peck, Mitchell Meier, Luke Houska and Nick Dee were fourth in 3:56.59. Freshman Spencer Hockert and senior John Vogeler both jumped 5-03 in the high jump as Hockert took fifth and Vogeler sixth.

Alexandria racked up plenty of points in the shot put with four individuals finishing in the top eight. Mitch Maday was second on the team behind Steidl with a third-place finish and a personal-best toss of 48-03.50. Brett Ludwig added a personal-best throw of 43-00 to finish eighth, while Logan Steidl was fifth after a throw of 44-09.

The Cardinals also got personal-best results outside of the overall top eight from Casey Call (1,600, 5:30.47), Houska (400, 1:00.39, high jump, 5-00), Jesse Groettum (800, 2:25.10), Peter Rohr (200, 28.46, long jump, 13-03.50), Mitch Roers (long jump, 14-07.50) and Dylan Larson (shot put, 38-10).

“We have a young team that will look to improve as the season progresses,” Empting said. “It will be exciting to follow the growth of this team.”
