The Alexandria boys’ basketball team entered the holiday break at .500 after splitting two games late last week.

The Cardinals fell in another close game on Saturday as New Prague handed them a 59-53 loss at home. That came after Alexandria had gone on the road to beat Detroit Lakes 64-53.

Chase Kohler had a nice night against New Prague, but it wasn’t quite enough as the Trojan’s Paul Friendshuh scored 20 points in leading his team to the win. Friendshuh signed a letter of intent in November to play at the Division I level for Richmond.

Kohler outdid him in the scoring column as the senior forward finished with 24 on 9-of-14 shooting. He went 4-of-7 from three, but John Vogeler was the only other Alexandria player in double figures with 15. Joe Gorghuber added seven points and a team-high 11 rebounds.

Vogeler had 22 points on a 9-of-13 shooting night in helping the Cardinals to a 64-53 win in Detroit Lakes last Friday. Travis Krueger added 14 on 6-of-8 shooting, while Gorghuber had seven points and eight rebounds.

Alexandria is now 4-4 and still 3-1 in the Central Lakes Conference. The Cardinals are tied for second with that record in league play. They will welcome in Brainerd (4-4, 2-2 CLC) on January 3 for a 7:30 p.m. tip.
