The Alexandria boys’ basketball team earned the second seed in the 8AAA tournament but was taking a two-game losing streak into the playoffs last night after falling in the regular-season finale to Detroit Lakes on Saturday.

The Cardinals couldn’t find much offense against the Lakers as Detroit Lakes won 52-40 and held Alexandria to just 16 points in the first half. Joe Gorghuber was the Cardinals’ only player in double figures with 10. John Vogeler added eight, but no other players had more than four points from there.

Christian Hedstrom led the Lakers with 14 points. Trey Lyngas added 10 for the Lakers, as well.

The win for the Lakers is an indication of how open the Section 8AAA field is as the teams entered the quarterfinals last night, Tuesday. Detroit Lakes is seeded fifth in the tournament but entered with an 18-8 record that now includes a split with Alexandria during the regular season.

The Cardinals are 12-11 and were scheduled to play seventh-seeded Little Falls last night. They lost to the Flyers the only time they played during the regular season.

Sartell-St. Stephen is the top seed in the tournament. The Sabres are 16-9 and third-seeded Albany is 20-5.
