Alex boys basketball will open state against Austin

The Alexandria boys' basketball team will open the Class AAA state tournament at Williams Arena this coming Wednesday against second-seeded Austin.

The two teams will play the third game of the day on Wednesday and are scheduled to tip off at 2 p.m.

The Cardinals are 15-11 overall and fresh off a 69-50 win over Fergus Falls in the section title game where they played one of their best games of the season. The Packers are 26-3 and will bring a 16-game winning streak into the state tournament out of Section 1AAA. They cruised through the section tournament, winning all three games by at least 15 points. Austin's defense is holding teams to 48.1 points per game this season, while the Packers average 64 points per game on offense.

De La Salle was seeded first in the Class AAA field and will open the tournament at 10 a.m. against St. Paul Central.
