Alex ArtWorks to hold October’s Third Thursday’s Art Show
Alex ArtWorks Third Thursday’s Art Show will be held Thursday, October 17 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Depot Express Restaurant in Alexandria.
This month’s selected artists are Nory McNellis and Naomi “Noni” Bjorklund. Their art will be on display for one month. All art exhibited is for sale.
On a visit to a friend, McNellis learned to dye silk with fiber reactive dyes and set the colors with steam. That was 15 years ago and she has been dyeing and selling silk ever since.
She uses a technique that is somewhat like painting a watercolor in wet flowing colors, then adding a dry brush design when the wet dyes dry.
Making art is McNellis’ third career. She began teaching elementary school in 1963 and left that to become a real estate agent in the 1980s. After retiring from that in 2002, she took up her first love: Art.
McNellis spends summers in the Glenwood/Starbuck area and winters in Florida. She has a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Northern Colorado and a Master of Arts from St. Cloud State University. She studied painting with master painter Yi Kai.
For Bjorklund, watercolor painting was like “falling in love.” She took every painting workshop she could and learned from such artists as June Young, Karen Knudtsen, Calvin DeRuyter, Grace Haverty, Rose Edin and Andy Evanson. In 2009, she studied drawing and painting with Myron Sahlberg at Alexandria Technical and Community College.
In 2011, she added copper enameling to her hobby of jewelry making and has since focused on making enamel jewelry for sale at local galleries and art shows.
Bjorklund’s artistic mission is to share the joy that color brings to her, to reflect the creativity of God the Creator, and to leave the world a more beautiful place if she can.
