One of the best seasons in Osakis softball history fell just short of a state-tournament appearance as the Silverstreaks' run came to an end with a 3-0 loss to Barnum last Thursday in St. Cloud.

The Bombers were one of just two teams to beat Osakis this season. They did it twice as the Bombers' Katrina Newman no-hit the Silverstreaks two times in as many days. The first of those came in a 6-0 win last Wednesday where Newman struck out 20 before finishing them off in the section finals.

Osakis bounced back from the loss on Wednesday to work its way to the championship through the losers' bracket. The Silverstreaks exploded for 17 runs in a 17-7, five-inning win over Kimball to give themselves another chance against Barnum.

Newman was just too much to handle. The two no-hitters gave her eight for the season and four in the Section 5A playoffs.

"We played a better game against Barnum [on Thursday] versus [Wednesday]," head coach John Stigman said. "Not that we played poorly on Wednesday, but we got some better swings in against an outstanding pitcher."

Sabrina Zimmel matched her pitch for pitch most of the game. She almost worked her way out of a jam in the third inning but the Bombers scored three runs with two outs to advance to their first state appearance since 2002.

Zimmel gave her team a chance to come back. She posted zeroes the rest of the way and finished by scattering five hits and two walks, while striking out two.

"Sabrina threw very well for us, probably her best outing of the year," Stigman said. "Defensively, we played well behind her. We did ourselves no disrespect today, getting bested by a very, very good team."

The Silverstreaks rebounded in a big way after the dominating performance by Newman in the opener on Wednesday. They jumped all over Kimball, scoring seven runs in the first and adding 10 more through the next three innings.

Kiera Zimmel was a big part of that. She finished 3-for-4 with two doubles and four RBI. Mercedes Klimek added a home run in the first and finished with two hits, two RBI and three runs scored.

The Bombers scored all six of their runs in the first two innings on Wednesday.
