Blood drive in Alexandria Oct. 2,3,5
The Red Cross blood drive is coming to Alexandria next week, and the nonprofit organization is asking eligible donors from all racial and ethnic backgrounds to give blood to maintain a diverse blood supply.
"Some blood types are unique to certain racial and ethnic groups, so a diverse blood supply is important to meeting the medical needs of an increasingly diverse patient population," the organization said in a news release. Patients are less likely to have complications from blood donated by someone with a similar ethnicity.
In Alexandria, donors have three opportunities to give blood next week: 1-7 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 2, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 420 Irving St; 10:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 3, at St. Mary's Catholic Church; or 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 5, at Cornerstone Church, 202 7th Ave. E.
To schedule an appointment, download the free Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). To help reduce wait times, donors are encouraged to make appointments and complete the RapidPass online health history questionnaire at redcrossblood.org/RapidPass.
The American Red Cross shelters supplies about 40 percent of the nation's blood, the news release said.
