Douglas County Library supporters seek more 'friends'

The Douglas County Library Friends and Foundation was recognized at Tuesday's Douglas County regular board meeting.

Karen Simmons, Douglas County Library interim director, asked commissioners to proclaim October 17-23 as Friends of the Library Week.

In addition, she urged all commissioners if they are not already members to become members of the foundation.

Simmons personally and publicly thanked the members of the Friends and Foundation for all their help this past year.

Currently, there are 300 members of the Douglas County Library Friends and Foundation and it has a 10-member board.

The annual book sale is one of the biggest events for the foundation, said Simmons. She noted that at this year's sale, there were between 1,200 and 1,400 boxes of books when the sale started and that at the end of the sale, there were about 200 boxes leftover.

In the proclamation, it states that the Friends and Foundation raises money that enables the library to move from good to great, providing the resources for additional programming, much needed equipment, support for children's summer reading and special events throughout the year.

The work of the Friends and Foundation highlights on an ongoing basis the fact that the Douglas County Library is the cornerstone of the community, providing opportunities for all to engage in the joy of lifelong learning and connect with the thoughts and ideas of others from ages past to present, according to the proclamation.

Simmons said that Friends and Foundation understand the critical importance of well-funded libraries and advocate to ensure that the library gets the resources it needs to provide a wide variety of services to all ages, including access to print and electronic materials, along with expert assistance in research, reader's advisory and children's services.

Before the board approved the proclamation, Simmons told them about an upcoming event that will take place during Friends of the Library Week. Minnesota author Will Weaver will be at the library on October 21 at 7 p.m. in the meeting room.

His books will be for sale and he will be available for book signing.

The board unanimously voted to approve the Friends of the Library proclamation.
