• Cherry Street Books in Alexandria will host author Rhonda Fochs for a book signing on Saturday, August 9 from 1 to 3 p.m. In Minnesota’s Lost Towns: Northern Edition, Fochs tells the stories of Minnesota “ghost towns,” places that prospered at some point but then died out. The book features some places in Douglas County, including Spruce Hill, Spruce Center, Chippewa and Belle River. Cherry Street Books is at 503 Broadway in downtown Alexandria.

• The Lake Region Arts Council (LRAC) recently appointed Gregory DeGier and Susan Scarborough, both of Alexandria, and James Arvidson of Parkers Prairie to its board of directors. DeGier is a member associate of several music, education and band organizations both nationally and within the state. Scarborough served as the community education director for Alexandria Public Schools for 28 years. Arvidson held many executive positions through community service organizations including the Lions, Jaycees, Lutheran Brotherhood, Church Council and Lakeland Hospice.

• Chet Seely was hired as Tastefully Simple’s vice president of sales. In this role, Seely will foster a commitment to consultants’ growth and a culture of stellar customer service. Most recently, Seely served as CEO of Park Power in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Other previous experience includes serving as chief marketing officer and senior vice president of sales and events for Isagenix, vice president of North Asia, and general manager of Korea for Melaleuca. Seely relocated to the Alexandria area with his husband, Gilbert, and their four children.

• The Bon-Ton Stores, Inc., which operates stores such as Herberger’s, will support STOMP Out Bullying and Blue Shirt Day World Day of Bullying Prevention for the third consecutive year. STOMP Out Bullying is a national bullying and cyberbullying prevention organization for children and teens. The blue shirts are on sale at Herberger’s stores and at until Monday, October 6 and 100 percent of proceeds will go to STOMP Out Bullying. Blue Shirt Day will be held on October 6. The public is encouraged to wear the blue shirts on that day.

• The law firm of Thornton, Reif, Dolan, Bowen and Klecker, PA has announced a contribution to the Outreach Food Shelf for the purchase of groceries for families in need. The Outreach Food Shelf is located at 1205 Lake Street, Alexandria and provides food support for residents of Douglas County and emergency food assistance to those in need. This contribution is part of a year-long community support initiative undertaken by the law firm in recognition of the 100th anniversary of the Thornton Law Office.

• Select Dairy Queen stores throughout Minnesota and western Wisconsin, including the two stores in Alexandria, will participate in the ninth annual Miracle Treat Day on Thursday, August 14. On Miracle Treat Day, $1 or more from every Blizzard Treat sold will be donated to Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, a national organization committed to raising awareness and funds for children’s hospitals.
