--The Krell Institute in Ames, Iowa is pleased to announce that Jamie Smedsmo of Alexandria was awarded a Computational Science Graduate Fellowship (CSGF) from the Department of Energy (DOE). A 1990 graduate of Jefferson High School in Alexandria, Smedsmo will pursue a doctoral degree in the field of environmental modeling at the University of North Carolina beginning this fall.

The fellowships are granted annually and fund the education of doctoral students whose course of study focuses on the use of high-performance computers to solve complex problems in science and engineering.

--The Alexandria Sertoma Club recently participated in Art-In-the-Park and was successful in raising funds that support their mission in the community. The mission of Sertoma is "to improve the quality of life today for those at risk or impacted by hearing loss through education and support."

--Book World in the Viking Plaza Mall is holding two book signing events with Minnesota authors in the next few days.

Jim Mohs, author of The Fed Man, will be at the store from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 1.

The novel, his first one, is about a young FBI agent whose life is changed when his wife and unborn child are killed in an automobile accident. He relocates to north central Minnesota where he is asked to help solve the murders of two teenagers. For more information, go to the website,

Minnesota native Jayne Jones and University of Minnesota graduate Alicia Long will be signing their book, Capitol Hell, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 4. The two met while working on the Norm Coleman for Senate campaign and became fast friends.

The book is described as a saucy novel about crazy coworkers, high maintenance politicians and over-the-top entourages that can only be found inside the beltway. For more information, go to the website,
