A new place for ink opens in Alexandria

What used to be Randy's Menswear has shown signs of activity the past few weeks, but has remained a mystery as sheets were hung over the windows.

But now the mystery is no more. The sheets have been removed, revealing the renovated building as a new tattoo shop called Valhalla Tattoos.

Jay Zuccala, the owner, moved to Alexandria from Arizona about four years ago to care for his grandfather. He worked at another tattoo shop in town before deciding to pursue his dream of opening his own.

"I've known I'd be moving in there for a couple of months," he said. "It kind of moved pretty fast. That's why I put the sheets up. I just wanted to keep it quiet until I was ready."

Zuccala has been a full-time tattoo artist for 18 years and says art is his passion.

"I was kind of brought into it," he said. "I've been an artist pretty much all my life and had kind of grown up around the tattoo industry so I knew a lot of tattoo artists."

Appointments at Valhalla Tattoo can be made by calling 480-440-3124. Walk-ins are also accepted.

"I do a lot of custom work, but there is a bunch of stuff for people to choose from," Zuccala said. "They can also bring in their ideas and I can draw those ideas out for them."

Zuccala's work can be seen on Instagram at valhalla_tattoos or on Facebook at www.facebook.com/ValhallaTattoosAlexandria.
