A restaurant revival
Sixth Avenue Wine and Ale fans can rest easy, as the restaurant will be making a comeback of sorts.
A new restaurant, owned by Mahrie Ohren of Evansville, will now occupy the space. It is called the Garden Bar on 6th.
"A couple years ago I went to New York, and I went to this place called Sweet Green," Ohren said. "It's like a trendy, hip, fast food salad joint. I just thought Alexandria could use something like that."
Ohren plans to keep some of the concepts of Sixth Avenue Wine and Ale, while also adding her own twist to the space.
"It will be similar in that it will be primarily wine and beer, no additional liquor," she said. "The biggest change will be a kitchen expansion so I can offer a full menu, which will be kind of nice."
The hours of operation will also change, as the Garden Bar on 6th will open at 11 a.m. Monday through Saturday. Monday through Thursday it will close at 10, but remain open until 11 p.m. or midnight on Friday and Saturday.
Lunch will include items such as signature salads, flatbreads, wraps and soups, while dinner will feature petite steak, trout, salmon and some pasta options. Desserts will also remain on the menu.
Additionally, Ohren plans to continue with the live music that Sixth Avenue Wine and Ale was known for.
"I'm really excited about it," she said. "I think they had a big draw for that."
The Garden Bar on 6th will be open for business May 1.
"I just want it to be something that's fun, healthy and affordable," Ohren said.
