Extension to offer low-tunnel strawberry workshop
The short growing season has limited local strawberry production, but there are newer, day-neutral varieties that may just provide the solution to extending the strawberry harvest.
A workshop addressing these varieties and more will be held on Thursday, April 20, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Douglas County Public Works Meeting Room, 526 Willow Drive in Alexandria. Local producers and home gardeners are invited to attend.
Steve Poppe from the University of Minnesota Extension West Central Research and Outreach Center will explore the science behind low-tunnel strawberries. During this workshop, he will present research-based information about:
• Recommended day-neutral strawberry cultivars.
• Organic production methods.
• Insect, weed and disease management.
• Fertility strategies.
• Low tunnel construction.
• Season long management strategies.
• Typical yields.
There is no cost to attend. However, attendees are encouraged to register in advance by calling the University of Minnesota Extension, Douglas County Office at (320) 762-3890.
