Carlos Creek named Winery of Year

Carlos Creek Winery was declared the 2018 Winery of the Year during the 10th annual International Cold Climate Wine Competition this month at the University of Minnesota.

The competition focuses on wines made with cold hardy grapes, fruit, or mead and is a partnership between the University of Minnesota Grape Breeding and Enology Project and the Minnesota Grape Growers Association. Winery of the Year is awarded based on a weighted medal count of the top five entries from each winery. Competition included 66 wineries from 16 states and two Canadian provinces.

Carlos Creek's White Marquette earned a trophy for Best-of-Show Rose. Medals went to: Frontenac Gris, double gold; White Marquette, Reserve Marquette and Reserve Frontenac earned golds; Russian Barrel Marquette, Petit Ami and Minnescato won silvers; and a bronze was awarded to Prairie Star and Triumph.

"Double golds — sometimes called consensus golds — are the pinnacle of

achievement in wine excellence," said head winemaker Russ Funk. "It means every judge on the panel for that wine instantly rated it as gold."

Every wine it entered at three competitions scored a medal, which Funk said shows consistent excellence.

NorthStar awards naming rights

Four manufacturing companies that have made significant contributions to the NorthStar Sports Complex have been awarded naming rights for various areas in the facility.

The complex, which is set to open this fall on Pioneer Road SE on Alexandria's south side, includes a field house for soccer, baseball, softball and golf, a hockey rink, a training area and a chapel on a 40-acre campus.

The naming rights that have been announced are:

• The hockey arena will be named after Aagard.

• The field house will be named after Douglas Machine.

• The soccer field will be named after Alexandria Industries.

• A team locker room will be named after FAST Global Solutions.

"It is because of the generosity of local businesses and individuals that we will be able to make this facility a reality," said Vern Anderson, co-chair of the leadership team.

The NorthStar Group has raised approximately 80 percent of its $8.5 million goal.
