When Mike Scarborough began working for State Farm Insurance in Alexandria 35 years ago, he had to build the business from the ground up.

"For the first three to five years I really worked hard," he said. "There was quite a bit of anxiety but I could see a light at the end of the tunnel after five years and knew that it was going to be a fruitful experience."

Scarborough, who officially retired on Sept. 30, says that although there have been hard moments in the past 35 years, there have also been humorous ones.

"That's a tough thing when it's you know someone very well and one of their family members dies in an accident," he said. "And on the other hand, we've had some hilarious situations. I think I could write a book about some of it."

Though he enjoyed many aspects of the job, Scarborough says he is going to miss the people the most.

"The part I'm going to miss the most is the daily dialogue with people," he said. "It's a people business and I've been very fortunate."

Two new agents — Amy Christopherson and Nate Hitch — have replaced Scarborough.

"They're both going to do well," Scarborough said. "They're both young and energetic."

In his retirement, Scarborough plans to spend time with his family and travel with Susan, his wife of 41 years. Though excited, he says he will miss the job.

"I'll be saying goodbye to people I've had for 33 or 34 years, and that's going to be hard," he said. "They've been loyal to us for a very long time and I'm very proud of that. It's been a good ride, it really has."
