• Several local employers were among businesses named Minnesota's Best Places to Work by Minneapolis/Saint Paul Business Journal which ran Aug. 18. Their list included Ecumen Bethany Community, along with other Ecumen communities, Ameriprise and Marco, each with local offices. The award is based on employee surveys and looks at work environment, communication, leadership, teamwork, innovation, and employee development. They were honored in an article at www.bizjournals.com/twincities.

• Five Douglas County employers were named to Prairie Business magazine's 50 Best Places to Work in the northern plains: 3M, Arvig, Gate City Bank, JLG Architects and Marco. It was based on an anonymous employee-satisfaction survey, which sought input on benefits, workplace culture and employee morale, among other factors. Prairie Business received more than 1,000 nominations from employees from around the region, said Tom Dennis, Prairie Business editor. The 50 Best winners will be honored in the magazine and on the web at prairiebusinessmagazine.com.

• Several new counselors have joined The Village Family Service Center in Alexandria, a nonprofit organization that provides therapy and skills training in Douglas, Pope and Grant counties. Michael Crouse is a mental health practitioner who works with children, adolescents and families in the community, school and home settings. He is earning his master's degree in counseling through Adler Graduate School in Richfield, Minn., and has experience as a licensed alcohol and drug counselor. Bobbi Steidl, a licensed independent clinical social worker, works as an outpatient and school-based therapist. She earned her master of social work degree from the University of South Dakota and is trained in trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy. Krystina Weiss provides in-home and school-based therapy. She graduated from St. Cloud State University with a master of science in marriage and family therapy, and is pursuing licensure as a marriage and family therapist.
