Operation Round Up grants awarded to 14 organizations

Runestone Electric Association's Operation Round Up has distributed more than $820,000 in grants to community-minded groups and organizations throughout the cooperative's service territory since its inception in 2003. More than 65 percent of REA's members allow their bills to be rounded up to the next dollar with the average monthly contribution being 48 cents.

The following 14 area organizations shared $21,775 in grants from Operation Round Up:

Fire Departments - First Responders: Parkers Prairie Community Ambulance, $1,000, and Garfield Fire and Rescue, $500.

Food Shelves: Long Prairie Emergency Food Pantry, $300; HK Area Food Shelf, $500; Hearts and Hands Food Shelf, $1,000; Outreach Food Shelf, $1,000; Stevens County Food Shelf, $500; and Grant County Food Shelf, $500.

Youth: Alexandria Area Hockey Association, $250; Alexandria Public School — Junior Achievement of Alexandria, $250; and Butterfly Hill Nature Preschool, $250.

Community: Honor Quilts, $500; Douglas County Sheriff's Posse, $500; Lake Reno Reformed Presbyterian Cemetery, $225; Birthright of Alexandria, $1,000; Red Willow Arts Coalition, $500; Pioneer Public Television, $250; Douglas County Car Care Program, $1,000; Douglas County Salvation Army, $1,000; Evansville Arts Coalition, $100; True Friends, $500; Knute Nelson Foundation, $500; Horizons, $300; West Central MN Communities Action, Inc., $1,000; Alexandria Area Uncompensated Care Plan, $1,000; Jingle Bells Foundation, $1,000; Someplace Safe, $850; Evansville Community Club, $250; Brandon History Center, $200; Pope County Families in Need, $1,000; Bethel Memorial Cemetery Association, $250; Millerville American Legion Inspiration Peak Post 527, $250; Windmill Project, $300; Douglas County Developmental Achievement Center, $500; Habitat for Humanity of Douglas County, $750; and Radiothon to End Child Abuse, $1,000.

Seniors: Alexandria Senior Center, $500, and Santa for Seniors, $500.

Area nonprofit organizations are encouraged to apply for Operation Round Up grants. The deadline for the next round of funding is Friday, Feb. 17.
