Sailer in Alexandria on Saturday for book signing

Cherry Street Books will host a book signing by author Paul M. Sailer on Saturday, March 31 from noon to 2 p.m.

Sailer, who lives in rural Wadena County, has written a biography of Major Don M. Beerbower, a WWII fighter pilot from Minnesota. The Oranges Are Sweet includes many color photographs and maps and follows Beerbower's life from small town Hill City in Aitkin County, Minnesota to his last combat mission over Germany on August 9, 1944.

Beerbower excelled as a fighter pilot and leader; in addition to his shooting skill, he possessed the key ingredient of our great aces - the ability to bring out the best in other fighter pilots in combat. At the time of his death, he was the leading ace in the 9th Air Force and the commanding officer of the 353rd Fighter Squadron, a unit that ended the war with more aerial victories than any other U.S. Army Air Forces squadron.

The author used Beerbower's personal letters and diaries and many other sources to bring his passion for flying to life for the reader. Extensive research was done with military documents and reports as well as first person interviews with surviving colleagues.

Cherry Street Books is located at 503 Broadway in Alexandria.
